The city of Washington has new garbage stickers to use on large garbage cans. The 2013 annual sticker is available for purchase at City Hall for 75 dollars.  That’s the same price as last year.  But the price could end up changing in the coming years.

The Washington Mayor Sandra Johnson indicates that during their budget workshops in the springtime, the city council will be reviewing the sanitation fund, which includes garbage collection, recycling, and yard waste removal.  Johnson plans to look at the fund at the same time the council reviews the sewer and water fund.  There are a number of continuing capital projects possible in that department like possible water tower and water storage replacement.

Johnson says that the sanitation fund has not been review for quite some time, and the sanitation fund revenue is behind budget.  The current contract with Luke’s Sanitation ends in the summertime, and Johnson suggests the council will consider letting bids for a new contract, rather than extending the current one.

Solid waste from Washington goes to the SEMCO landfill near Richland.  That landfill reduced it’s fees for dumping last summer.  However, since the company that’s contracted to collect solid waste Washignton is the one that pays the fee, Johnson says they are the ones that benefited from the reduction rather than the city.
