The plant experts at Iowa State University have compiled some advice for people that like to use real trees for their Christmas tree. A dry tree can pose a fire hazard. The most important factor to preventing drying out is to keep the reservoir fill with nothing more than water, and to keep the tree away from heat sources.  When purchasing a tree, the needles of a fresh tree are pliable, and dry tree needles are brittle.
