The Winfield- Mt. Union volleyball team fell one match short of making it to the state tournament, as No. 2 Holy Trinity Catholic defeated them 3-0.
Holy Trinity won 25-11, 25-16 and 25-15 to advance to state.
WMU head coach Dave Pieart said nerves were clearly visible at the start of the match.
“We started out very nervous, very jittery and so the first half of game one didn’t go well at all,” Pieart said. “After that, the second half of game one, most of game two and parts of game three we played pretty well, but we just couldn’t maintain our consistency, and all of the credit in the world goes to Holy Trinity, in being able to take us out of what we wanted to do.”
WMU’s Shelby Therme led the team in kills with nine, while Katie Benson had 14 assists, Emily Mathews had two blocks and Alicia Escher had 14 digs.
Pieart says even though it is tough to talk about now, his team accomplished a lot this season.
“This is only the third team in school history to get this far, and that is what we talked about in the locker room afterward, nobody wants to lose, it’s painful, but they were going to wake up this morning as one of the greatest teams in school history,” Pieart said, “For the [returners on the team] we build on that, we try to take one more step, we learn the lessons from this year, and try not to start nervous in big games next year.”
WMU ends their season at 28-8.
