Washington County’s weather alert system has sent out its first winter storm alerts. Washington County 911 Supervisor Cara Sorrells says due to the uneventful winter we had last year this was the first time the Washington Emergency Notification System has sent out a winter storm alert since its implementation in 2011.

She says that due to some concerns they’ve made it so winter weather alerts will only be sent out between 9am and 5pm.

The Safety Center sent out a memo this morning apologizing for any inconvenience their alerts caused during the overnight. It was set up to send alerts 24 hours a day in order to notify residents of other severe weather events, specifically tornadoes.
