Friday’s Southeast Iowa Superconference girls game between IMS and Lone Tree was another close hard fought game that came down to the final play, as it so often does when these schools get together, with IMS pulling out a 58-57 win. It was nip tuck the entire first half, with neither team holding an advantage of more than six points. Lone Tree took a slim 30-29 lead into the locker room. In half number two IMS stepped up the defensive pressure and turned Lone Tree turnovers on seven straight possessions into an 18-6 run that lasted the entire quarter. After the game Head Coach Aaron Gingerich talked about his team’s opportunistic defense

“The girls did a good job getting into the pass lanes, and that is something that we have been talking about the last couple of days is trying to get ball pressure and get in pass lanes and get steals,” Gingerich said. “Just overall I thought our ball pressure was better, we still have to work on our post defense, overall I thought our guards did a pretty good job.”

Lone Tree regrouped in the final quarter behind 10 fourth quarter points from Maggie Schmidt and tied the game at 56 with under a minute to play. In the final minute Lone Tree gave IMS the basketball following another costly turnover, their 23rd of the night. On the final IMS possession the initial shot was missed but the rebound came to Hannah Gingerich who was ruled to have been fouled with no time remaining giving her two free throw attempts, either of which would win the game. Gingerich calmly stepped to the line alone and drained the first, sealing the IMS win. IMS was led by Olivia Yutzy’s 21 points and six rebounds. Lone Tree got a double double from Madelyn Flemr, 10 points and 10 boards along with 18 from Kennedi Warson and 10 from Maggie Schmidt. IMS is now 1-3 on the year and will take on English Valleys tonight. Lone Tree falls to 4-2 and will take on Wapello Tuesday.
