The City of Kalona will hold off on making a decision regarding a compost area and updated burning ordinance.

City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says they’ve reached out to the DNR to assist them with the design of the compost area. They’re now waiting on preliminary numbers that will show how much yard waste they’d be able to process.

He adds that any amendment to their burning ordinance would be tailored to those estimates. He says first they looked at 20 like sized communities to see how they dealt with burning within city limits.  Policies varied from towns that didn’t allow burning at all to others that set specific days when burning could take place.
