The early season schedule has tested the Mid-Prairie boys basketball team no doubt and after games with class 3A Washington and on the road against #4 West Branch the Golden Hawks stood at 2-0 entering play Thursday night in Mediapolis. In a game heard on AM and FM KCII the Golden Hawks further cemented their status as road warriors with a 62-46 win over the Bulldogs. The first half saw the teams swap the lead over a half dozen times. Both offenses were able to convert in their end despite turnovers and Mid-Prairie took a slim 34-30 lead into the locker room, led by reserve Nick Stimson who posted 13 points off the bench in the half for the Hawks.

Mid-Prairie made an intensity adjustment with their 2-3 zone defense at the halftime break and held the Bulldogs to just 16 second half points as they slowly pulled away in the second half. After the game Head Coach Chris Kern spoke about the message to his team at the break.

“I did challenge them at half, I said this is a gut check here, we have to come to come out and we have to play defense this half, and our goal was to keep them under 50 and they did that,” Kern said. “Halftime we talked about keeping the pressure on them, wear them down and come back to our two defense, and we just felt that if we could do that, and rebound, box out, it would come through, and I just think that our defense paid off.”

Spurred by that defensive philosophy and balanced scoring Mid-Prairie took a 47-41 lead into the final quarter and closed the door on the Bulldogs over the last eight minutes allowing just eight points while pulling away for the 16 point win. Mid-Prairie was led by Stimson who finished with 17, Reid Miller had 10 points. Mediapolis was led by 12 from Caleb Gerst. With the win Mid-Prairie is now 3-0 on the young season and will be back in conference action tonight when they travel to Iowa City Regina.
