Coming off of a rough week in which they dropped a pair of conference games on the road, the Mid-Prairie girls basketball team got just what they needed Tuesday night posting a blowout 49-19 win over the Tipton Tigers in Wellman. In a game heard on KCII, Mid-Prairie led 12-4 after the first eight minutes and pushed that to a 34-12 lead going to the halftime break on the strength of tenacious defense that led to easy baskets. Following the game Head Coach Marc Pennington talked about his team’s effort and good start.
“We had a tough we last week, we all know that, we gave up more points than we’ve ever given up, we just didn’t play with the same intensity that we need to play with, and I thought that was our challenge yesterday in practice, we didn’t talk hardly at all about Tipton, to me it wasn’t about that, it’s more about how we play and what do we do,” Pennington said,. “Tonight I thought the first half especially getting a lot of hands on balls, just keeping them completely out of whack offensively, I thought our kids did a nice job of making them work for everything thing they had.”
The Golden Hawks continued to give the Tipton offense problems with full court press out of the break forcing 26 turnovers for the game and allowing just one field goal from the floor the entire second half. Mariah Swartzentruber led the Golden Hawks with 10 points while Meghan Redlinger and Taylor Kurtz each posting nine. Mid-Prairie is now 3-2 overall and 2-2 in Cedar Valley Conference. The Hawks will host Durant Friday night.
