With southeast Iowa experiencing it’s first winter weather event of the year Washington County Sheriff Jerry Dunbar has information for those who may be out traveling on area roadways. Weather conditions like we are currently experiencing can lead to blowing and drifting as well as black ice on the road surface. Dunbar advises that before you begin driving in these conditions inspect your vehicle including tire pressure, radiator, antifreeze levels, and a full tank of gasoline.

Weather conditions like we are currently experiencing can lead to blowing and drifting snow and black ice on the road surface. Dunbar says drivers should not only be thinking about what they can do to avoid an accident but also what they need to do if they are involved in an accident including having a preparedness kit. Dunbar suggests drivers keep a preparedness kit within the vehicle during winter driving including blankets, extra coats, gloves, sandbags for traction and a shovel.
