Creation of a new task force and discussion of a sidewalk cafe ordinance are on the agenda for the Washington City Council tonight. In strategic planning and goal setting sessions, the council outlined a desire to evaluate the nature and condition of the city’s residential housing.  A task force will be doing that work and making possible recommendations for action to the council.  First, the group needs to be formed, which could happen at tonight’s meeting.

The sidewalk cafe ordinance would change rules mostly in downtown Washington related to how restaurants can use public space adjacent to their property.  It would allow permitting for outdoor eating areas in public spaces.  Some of the rules in the ordinance are making sure there is space for pedestrians and creating a temporary fence that designates the eating area.  Those fences would be required if the area will contain seating for four or more people.

The sidewalk cafe ordinance has two more votes of the council before becoming law.  Public input is designated during the council meeting.
