Hundreds of market beef animals are being prepared for next summer’s Washington County Fair and Ak-Sar-Ben. Over the weekend, a beef weigh-in had cattle weighed, tagged, retinal scanned, or had DNA collected.

On Saturday at the Kalona Sale Barn, 117 Washington County 4-H and FFA members enrolled.  And 229 market beef animals were weighed for the coming year.

One reason for the weigh-in is to determine the animal’s rate of weight-gain over time.  Among those people assisting on Saturday were Cattlemen’s association directors, 4-H beef superintendent and volunteers, 4-H and Youth Committee members, County Council members, extension office staff, and 4-H families.
