Washington Falls to Solon on a Fouled Filled Night

The Washington Demons fell to Solon Saturday night 55-49.
The Demons and Spartans both had great starts, staying very even through most of the first half, with the first ending with the Demons down one, and the half ending with Washington and Solon tied at 26.
After halftime, old issues reared their ugly head into the Demon’s game, and fouls became an issue, putting the Spartans in the double bonus early in the fourth quarter.
Washington was also in the double bonus starting the fourth quarter, but when fouls aren’t the trouble, free throws are, as Washington was just 12-24 from the charity stripe, and 6-13 in the second half.
The other issue was rebounds, which head coach Phil Long talked about in the postgame show.
“It’s kind of going to be our Achilles heel if you will that a big aggressive rebounding team on the offensive end, if we don’t block out well, they’re going to get a lot of second, third and fourth looks which then causes us a lot of fouls and sends them to the line,” Long said. “At the same time we go 12-24 from the free throw line so you’re leaving 12 points out there and you lose by six. But on the positive side we scored 49, which lately it’s been hard to get out of the 30’s, and in the first half I felt like we played pretty decently.”
Sammy Ellingson, Stephanie Fishback and Beth Dillon all led the team in points with eight.
Washington falls to 3-2 on the year and will open up conference play on Friday against Fairfield, and you can hear on the one to count on for today’s local sports coverage AM and FM KCII.
