The Washington girl’s basketball team went to Fairfield and took care of business last night getting the win 44-39.
Both teams struggled with fouls in the first quarter and making shots, with the Demons in the bonus after the first quarter and after the first quarter the score was 9-6.
In the second both teams yet again struggled to make shots, shooting from three point range but nothing falling, until Beth Dillon made a three pointer, three of the six points the Demons would get in the quarter, and Washington took the lead into halftime at 15-14.
Into the third quarter, the battle continued for the lead, as Washington held on to it for the quarter, but Fairfield started to battle back as they pushed the ball up and down the court and worked a quick aggressive transition game to keep the game within one.
In the fourth quarter the Demons struggled, and Fairfield took the lead, but just as they did Grace Redlinger got hot from the three point arc and nailed one along with Lauren Kimball to secure the lead, and the Demons road out the double bonus t a 44-39 victory.
Leading scorer for the Demons, with 12, Beth Dillon said in the midst of the fourth quarter her team stayed positive.
“We just knew we had to stay calm, and this is how a lot of our games are and we’re going to have to play through little ruts like and we’re just going to have to keep our heads up and work through it and it will come out [okay],” Dillon said.
Head coach Phil Long said his team did better tonight, they weren’t perfect but better.
“We should be getting better all of the time, and with as many kids as we are playing, sometimes that is a down side because you’re not getting enough minutes to learn their rotations or know what your role is,” Long said. “Tonight we told the kids prior to the game that we’ve been playing 11-12 kids all along, but the majority of the game is being played by our top 7-8 kids.”
Washington is now 1-0 in the conference
