Sydney Black’s three bred heifers came from the Bernie Bolton of Bern-A-Dale Shorthorns in Oakland, Iowa. Her new shorthorn heifers will all calve in May this year (photo submitted).

A Washington County 4-H member is the recipient of three bred heifers through the Iowa Foundation Heifer Program.   Sydney Black is the daughter of Chris and Tara Black, and she will receive three shorthorn heifers to take care of.  The program is in its third year, and it’s meant to help start foundation beef herds. Applicants must be in seventh grade to apply, and when Sydney graduates from high school in five years, she will contribute six-thousand dollars back into the program.

She will be recognized next month at the Iowa Beef Expo Annual Kick-off Party in Des Moines. The award is chosen by the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation and the Iowa Beef Breeds Council.
