The girls game set the bar high Tuesday night in Wellman but the boys game brought just as much as excitement as Iowa City Regina pulled out a 42-40 road win over Mid-Prairie. The Golden Hawks did their damage in the first half from behind the arc knocking down five three pointers to take a 20-16 lead into the halftime break. In the second half both teams traded small runs and the lead into the fourth quarter. After the game Head Coach Chris Kern spoke about the back and forth second half.
“I thought there was a stretch in the third quarter that we gave up some offensive rebounds to Regina, second shots that hurt us there in that third, and they outscored us in the third,” Kern said. “So what we have to do is concentrate [for] four quarters.”
Mid-Prairie led by four with under three minutes to play but couldn’t finish the victory as Regina clawed back to within 40-39 with just 27 seconds to play. The Regals would take their final lead on a scramble play as Johnny Ries missed a three and Mid-Prairie was unable to secure the defensive rebound. With three players on the floor for the ball Mark Ward picked it up for Regina, put it in the basket, was fouled and completed the three point play at the line with 10 seconds remaining. The Golden Hawks got one final look at their end but the runner came up short. Mid-Prairie was led by Dayton Hall’s 14 points. Mid-Prairie is now 6-7 overall and 3-6 in the Cedar Valley Conference.
