The Washington Demon girls fell in conference play last night for the first time in two years.

Washington had a rough start to the game, as just 2:30 in Beth Dillon picked up her second foul of the quarter and had to sit for the rest of the half.

The Demons offense was hot and cold as well, hitting some shots, and missing other, but it was clear from the beginning that the three point shot wasn’t making a come back this game, as only one was made in the first half.

Washington trailed at half 16-15.

Out of the break the Demon’s gave up the three ball and paid for it, with Lakyn Boltz hitting two and Alexis Kemp hitting one, the Demons went from being in the game, to having to make it a game. Washington trailed by nine after three.

In the fourth is was all up to the Demons to put the pressure on, and they did clawing all the way back to within three, and then the dreaded under the basket layup that haunted them in their loss to Pella came back, and on two fast breaks caused by the active hands of Dema Giardino, the Demons failed to finish under the basket on their first and second attempts.

Washington in all missed 12 under the basket shots and four in the fourth quarter to fall for the first time in conference play 45-40.

Demon head coach Phil Long said despite finding problems in the rims, under the basket you have to make the shot.

“I was proud of myself we found defects in all of the rims, and it took me 10 minutes to adjust them all, and we shot well in practice, because I got in their head that I fixed their shooting problems when I fixed all of the rims, but who cares about all of that when your two feet away you have to be able to bank the ball in and finish,” Long said.

Washington has a week off to prepare for Ft. Madison on Friday.
