In the regular season wrap up for both girls squads, Lone Tree built and early lead and withstood a second half WACO run to grab a 52-42 road win Tuesday night. After leading by a 25-17 score at the half, Lone Tree pushed that lead to 15 before WACO began their comeback late third quarter. The Warriors used an 18-3 run to take a short lived 37-36 lead early in the fourth quarter. Following the game WACO head Coach Shannon Rugg talked about his teams play during their second half comeback.
“We got a little confidence and made a couple of shots,” Rugg said. “We made some stops defensively and got a few rebounds, and you can get on a little run in high school sports and it will carry you a little ways, unfortunately this one didn’t carry us far enough.”
Down the stretch Lone Tree was able to make enough play to hold off the Warriors and finish out the 10 point win. Lone Tree Head Coach Travis Pierson talked after the game about his team’s offensive balance.
“Yesterday’s practice was really good, we worked on ball movement and shooting and free throws, unfortunately that one didn’t pay off, but also shooting on outside shots and if we can get outside shots to fall the inside opens up really well for us,” Pierson said.
In the win Lone Tree was led by Madelyn Flemr’s 16 points, 12 of those came in the first half. Flemr talked about after the game about her play and what keyed the nice offensive night.
“I saw someone smaller was on me and I’m going to take advantage of that and go hard to the basket and it was working for me so I just need to knock down the shots and make it count,” Flemr said. “I think girls were looking ahead and hitting the girl when they were open and we were going to the basket hard, which I think helped us a lot.”
Cara Chamberlain also added 13 points for the Lady Lions. Aaliyah Brown led WACO with nine points and eight boards. With the win Lone Tree stands at 9-11 on the year while WACO falls to 6-13 overall.
