In a game that featured two contrasting styles Lone Tree got the transition game going in second quarter and ran away from WACO for an 87-38 boys conference win in Wayland Tuesday night. Lone Tree led throughout but the Lions were up just 16-9 at the end of the first quarter playing a pace that favored WACO. In the second quarter the Lions flipped the switch putting up 22 points to take a 38-20 lead into the halftime break. Lone Tree Head Coach Tom Squires talked after the game about his team taking control during the second eight minutes
“Coach Hilmer is a great coach and he always has a great game plan, he always tends to slow us down and bit and I told the guys before the game starts was the whole key for us was to get out and run and set the pace that we normally set. The first quarter I thought we played WACO’s pace and the second quarter we played ours, and it stayed that way for the rest of the game because WACO had to get out of that delayed offense and they really had to get out and run with us,” Squires said.
The second half was more of the same as Lone Tree used a balanced offensive attack, quick pace and WACO turnovers to put the game away. The Lions were led by Brian Forbes and his 23 points. After the game Forbes spoke about his team’s performance.
“We definitely needed to get the ball out and get it going, WACO likes to slow us down and luckily we got a lot of layups in the beginning, there was a lot of penetration,” Forbes said. “The Press really worked in the second half, we came out man-to-man in the second half. Defensively it worked really well we had great rotation and just buckled down.”
Logan Forbes had 16 points, Gabe Lorack 11 and Trenton Gosnell 10 points Lone Tree posted four double digit scorers. WACO was led by Tyler Ayers with 15 points, Klinton Garrett added 10. Following the game WACO Head Coach Bob Hilmer spoke about his team on the night.
“Ayers has had a great season so far, he played with four fouls in the second half and did a great job, and Klinton Garrett has come on strong later in the year and did a great job, and I am proud of the effort I thought we went after things hard,” Hilmer said.
With the win Lone Tree stays perfect at 19-0 on the year. WACO is now 6-12 on the campaign.
