The Mid-Prairie boys basketball team has seen more than it’s fair share of close losses after the Holiday break. Monday’s game with Cedar Valley Christian followed the same script as the Hawks fell in Wellman 58-54. The two teams were deadlocked at 22 going to the locker room but the Huskies began the second half on a 9-2 run to get some breathing room. In total Cedar Valley Christian posted 22 third quarter points and held a 44-35 lead going to the final eight minutes. Mid-Prairie would claw back and tie things late but after Will Muhlbach hit a pair of free throws with under 30 seconds remaining the Golden Hawks were unable to answer with a basket at their end. Following the game Head Coach Chris Kern talked about the important third quarter and missed opportunities in the paint.
“The game plan was to come out and play good half court man-to-man defense. Three of the four quarters we did that, the third quarter I thought we gave up some easy baskets in the paint, we let some people cross out face in the lane sometimes, we didn’t have the offensive production,” Kern said. “We need to finish shots in the paint, it’s kind of become a broken record the last few times of us finishing shots, and then we don’t lose by two or four points.”
With the loss Mid-Prairie is now 7-8 overall and will travel to Durant tonight. You can hear the game live on AM and FM KCII and KCIIradio.com following the Mid-Prairie girls game.
