Rivalry Saturday is a girls basketball event put together to showcase the best in the state of Iowa. On Saturday afternoon, the #8 ranked Mid-Prairie girls stole the show upsetting the #4 ranked Bullettes of Mediapolis 40-31 at Cornell College. In a game heard on KCII, Mid-Prairie led wire to wire on the strength of an air tight defense that held one of the state’s top five scoring teams to no field goals for a 10 minute stretch and just nine first half points. The Golden Hawks did it with aggressive play in the passing lanes forcing 21 turnovers. Mid-Prairie lead by as many as 18 in the second half. When the Bullettes made their run late they could get no closer than 35-31. Mid-Prairie had just enough left in the tank, despite going 4 of 13 down the stretch at the free throw line, using clutch stops and rebounding to put the game away. Mid-Prairie was led by 16 points from Mariah Swartzentruber. With the win the Golden Hawks are now 6-2 overall, the loss was the first for Mediapolis on the season leaving them at 10-1. Mid-Prairie will next be in action Tuesday night at home against Wilton.
