Demon Girls Fall in Conference Again

The Washington Demon girls fell to Ft. Madison last night 38-37.

Washington kept it a one point game after the first quarter, trailing after not being able to knock down the three ball and missing their easy bunnies that they have struggled with.

In the second quarter they put some distance between them and the Bloodhounds, going into the lock room leading 14-9.

The second half was a lot different, as Ft, Madison switched to a 2-3 zone that the Demons struggled with the entire second half. Washington could not find a way to penetrate, so was forced to shoot from the perimeter which they have been cold from, and trailed after three 21-20.

In the fourth quarter, Ft. Madison broke through the Demon defense and put themselves up three possessions with two minutes and change remaining, before Lauren Kimball found her stroke and nailed three, three pointers in a row. The third one came with just 1.1 seconds left on the clock, and didn’t give Washington enough time to do anything, as the clock ran out and the Demon took their second conference loss of the season.

Demon head coach Phil Long said his team’s goal is to try and go to the line, but he doesn’t think that the calls have been there as of late.

“Quite honestly I felt like the last two games especially tonight when our kids did attack the basket they were getting and there were just no calls and our kids lost their confidence, they weren’t getting rewarded by going to the free throw line, and the ball was getting to the rim from eight feet away, someone has to protect the shooters,” Long said. “Gave up 38 points, and I used to say that first one to get to 50 wins, but recently with every team we play it has been the first team to 40 wins, and we just have to find a way to get to 40.”

Demons were led by Kimball with 11 points on the night, while Ft. Madison was led by Rachel Steffensmeier.

Washington can still win the conference outright, but this Friday’s game against Mt. Pleasant is a must win.

Washington will play next on Tuesday when they host Mid-Prairie.
