Earlier this week the governing body of the Olympic games, the International Olympic Committee, made the decision to drop wrestling from its list of events for the 2020 games and beyond. The shockwaves are being felt across the sporting world. Mid-Prairie Head Wrestling Coach Justin Garvey describes the effect this decision has on the sport of wrestling at the local level as taking away the pinnacle of the sport and a punch in the stomach to the wrestling community. Garvey also cited that many other countries have large wrestling interests including Russia and the middle east and that this decision hurts the sport on an international level. At the 2012 Olympic Games held in London 180 countries were represented in wrestling events with 29 countries taking home medals.
