The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks advanced three wrestlers from Saturday’s Sectional at Vinton-Shellsburg into the district round next week. The Golden Hawks had one sectional champion as Nearoth Peterschmidt dominated the bracket at 195 posting a pair of pins to win the title, the falls took a combined 3:36. At 182 Phirom Peterschmidt rolled into the title match but fell to Chase Shedenhelm of Denver Tripoli in a 16-1 tech fall. That was still enough to advance Peterschmidt with a second place finish. Josh Murphy also punched his ticket to district for the Golden Hawks at 113 pounds. Murphy fell in the title match by fall and had to wrestle back for second place. In the win or go home match Murphy found himself on his back early but rallied to post a second period pin against Tyler Watson of Charles City. Murphy spoke after the match about moving on.
“I just knew that I had to wrestled tough to make it through and try my hardest, I just had to fight through it, sometimes I get into bad positions and I just have to try my best to get out of it,” Murphy said. “Last year I didn’t even make it through sectionals, so I just keep working myself up every year.”
Head Coach Justin Garvey summarized the day following his wrestlers last match
“I’m really proud of my guys, I feel like they came out and battled all day long. Obviously there are a couple of matches that could have went the other way for us and we would have been a lot happier on the day, but ultimately we got three guys through and realistically that is probably the best that we could have done all day,” Garvey said.”
Mid-Prairie’s three wrestlers will be in district action next Saturday at Solon.
