In a match of the top two teams in class 1A Friday night in Wellman, the #1 undefeated Danville Bears ran through undefeated #2 Lone Tree 64-41. The game heard on KCII was the championship game of the Southeast Iowa Superconference Shoot out. Lone Tree led 5-2 out of the gate, but the turning point of the night came early as Danville erased the Lion’s early lead with a 22-0 run that spanned 9 minutes, led by Stephen Soukup who scored the first 13 for the Bears. After the game Lone Tree Head Coach Tom Squires broke down the Danville run and the dry spell by his team.

“We went on a 5-2 lead early, and then they went on a big run, and I just didn’t think we had an answer for it, I thought our kids panicked a little bit on the offensive end, I thought we took some shots that we shouldn’t have taken, and I thought that we weren’t very patient against their zone,” Squires said. “Once we got down eight or nine, we tried to make up that lead in two possessions, we shot a lot from the perimeter, we didn’t look at our post players much and then all of a sudden those shots don’t fall they get a run out and then all of a sudden that eight or nine point lead goes up to 20 or 25.”

The run led to a 35-12 Danville lead at the break. In the second half the Bears put together a quick 5-0 burst to keep momentum. Lone Tree was unable to get closer than 23 despite better offensive and defensive execution. Stephen Soukup had a game high 30, Michael Soukup added 17 in the win for Danville. Lone Tree was led by Bryan Forbes and his 16 points. The victory extends Danville’s conference winning streak to an amazing 75 games, they are now 21-0 on the year. Lone Tree is now 21-1 and will get set for first round district action next week.
