A Washington County inmate is being held for deportation, following his arrest for drunk driving. At around 1am Sunday 43-year-old Jose Armando Flores-Rivera of Iowa City was arrested in Kalona for driving while intoxicated and operating without a valid driver’s license. It was later found he had an outstanding warrant of deportation for an immigration violation, and is now being held for the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

According to Washington County Sheriff Jerry Dunbar, the county arrests 10 to 15 illegal immigrants a year.  He says they usually end up dismissing the charges and handing them over to ICE, but adds there are ways to keep them until after their trial.
