While the weather so far this year has been typical of an Iowa winter with cold temperatures and some snow and freezing rain, the city of Washington is pacing well ahead of budget for salt and sand supplies. Washington Maintenance and Construction Supervisor JJ Bell tells KCII news, that the city budgets each year for 250 tons of salt and sand. So far this winter around 70 ton of the compounds have been used, placing usage to date at just 30 percent of their total budget for the winter entering February.  Bell says in January, city road crews used 48 tons of salt and sand. Bell explains that salt and sand used by the City of Washington comes from county stockpiles. The City is required to keep records on amounts used each month and reimburse the county based on those numbers.
