Columbus Junction high school and Winfield-Mt.Union are looking to move forward with a plan to combine wrestling teams, with WMU coming up to Columbus to join the team.

The issue was brought up during a special public meeting, and was positively received by both the board and the coaches said Superintendent Marlene Johnson.

“The coaches here were very receptive, the Athletic Director was receptive, the board was very positive of it,” Johnson said. “Everyone had a few questions about it, but with clarification, it just seemed like it would be a good process to look in to. It looks like a positive thing to move toward.”

This merger would take place in the 2013-14 season, increasing the numbers for Bill Plein’s team.

Columbus did not send anyone to the state tournament this year, but had multiple third place and runner up finishes at the sectional meet at Mediapolis.
