As part of their flood mitigation plan, Kalona will do a detailed study on the west drainage ditch, also known as Salvesen Creek. Kalona Mayor Ken Herington says they need to find out what its drainage capacity is. After that, they’ll look at ways to increase the capacity, so that if flooding or heavy rain occurs, they can get the water away from town faster.

An engineer’s estimate came in around $11,000. He notes they’re waiting to see if the Washington County Engineer’s Office wants to bid on the project. A decision could be made at their meeting next week.
