Lone Tree had their season ended yesterday after a loss to defending state champions Boyden-Hull.

The Lion’s came out strong in the first taking a six point lead at one points in time, and leading after one 14-11 despite not having any points from their leading scorer Bryan Forbes.

In the second quarter Lone Tree continued to try and push the tempo, but the Comets found a way to break down the Lions, taking the lead from them midway through the second. With 1:04 left on the clock coach Tom Squires took a time out, switched up the full court press, and in 45 seconds retook the lead into the locker room leading 23-20.

After the first half Bryan Forbes had only five points, while Andy Dodson had 10. Dodson spoke after the game about the first half and what the strategy was.

“Basically it was find where their shooters were and find the guy that could help off,” Dodson said. “Offensively we didn’t know how they would handle the pressure, so we came out and pressed them right away, and they met the match, basically I did what I could, we brought our motion offense into this and it just wasn’t enough.”

Coming out of the break, Boyden-Hull found a way to break the press quickly, and got the Lions into foul trouble, causing Lone Tree to have to back off, which let the Comets grab a big lead scoring 13-5 in the third quarter, and leading 33-28.

In the final quarter Bryan Forbes became the player he is on paper, going coast to coast and nailing three’s to try and get his team back in the game, getting as close as one three times, before fouls became the issue and Boyden-Hull extended their lead past what Lone Tree could make up winning 58-54.

Forbes led the game in points with 29, Dodson was behind him with 10.

Lion’s head coach Tom Squires talked after the game about how it may hurt now, but despite the loss, Lone Tree had an amazing season, and the seniors have had a record two seasons.

“They set their goal to get down here, and I was reading an article today in the paper about how in class 1A there are 160 teams and only eight made it and we were one of the eight, you know it hurts for us a little bit right now, [but] they’re going to look back at this and they’re going to remember this as a great season and a great last two years, we won 45 games in the last two years, we went 45-6 in tow years, two conference championships and got to the state tournament,” Squires said.

Lone Tree ends their season 25-2, with their only loses coming to the defending state champion, and the number one team in the state and at the state tournament.
