The Washington Demon boy’s track and field team finish up their indoor season today when they travel to UNI for the Dickinson relays.
Although Washington has been able to get to four indoor meets this season, head coach Steve Roth said the indoor season is tough on the body and really doesn’t prepare you completely for the outdoor season, especially on the long distance runners.
“You can tell they are getting a little bored with the indoor season, it is hard on their legs, it’s tight curves and we have some people with some tight legs and are a little sore right now,” Roth said. “Any time their legs are sore you don’t want to run them, indoors you can’t stride out, you can’t get a quality work out. We’ve done a lot of agility stuff, quick stuff, but it is really hard on the distance guys.”
The boys will have to continue battling the cold weather and strong winds for practice this week with highs in the lower to mid thirties with windy conditions, including a forecasted high of 33 on Thursday, the scheduled opening day of the Demon’s outdoor season when they host the Washington Relays.
Roth noted that if the weather is as bad as they are predicting, it may be unsafe to have a track meet that day.
Tonight’s indoor, and out of the elements Dickinson relays at UNI have a start time of 1 P.M.
