Like many other communities in the area, the City of Wellman is applying for the Safe Routes to School grant. City Administrator Nick Pacha says the grant would go toward completing the sidewalk that comes down from North Park and dead ends once it reaches school property.

He says it would fund other things, like an educational bike rodeo and additional traffic enforcement on Highway 22. He notes that would include extra patrol and electronic radars.

Grant recipients will be notified sometime in June, with funds available starting in October. This Iowa Department of Transportation program was started to try and curb childhood obesity, by encouraging youth to walk or bike to school.
