Last fall over 200 deer were processed at a local business and sent to Iowa’s food banks. Owner of Crawford Meat Plant in Wayland, Danny Crawford, says with the HUSH program, he processes donated deer into ground venison for free, and then sends it to the Food Bank of Southern Iowa in Ottumwa.

HUSH stands for Help Us Stop Hunger, and is a partnership between the Iowa DNR and the Food Bank of Iowa.

Crawford adds there’s a $1 charge tacked on each deer hunting license, which funds the statewide program.
