Currently, in Iowa, cell phones are charged 65-cents each month for 911 services, such as telecommunicators and dispatch services. Landlines have a surcharge of $1 monthly. The Iowa legislature is considering equalizing the surcharge. Cara Sorrells, supervisor at the Washington Safety Center says she hopes the bill to raise cell phone surcharges passes because it would help with emergency services funding. She also says that many emergency calls come from cell phones as people pass accidents and other situations.
