Over this school year a grant has helped a group of teachers at Wellman Elementary monitor, assess, and shape instruction around the progress of their students. The Formative Assessment Group was formed in November for classroom and title 1 teachers. They meet twice a month to talk about the progress students are making, and decide which kids should be moved to a more appropriate group.

According to Title 1 Reading Teacher Mary Gregg, unlike summative assessments, which evaluate the student’s knowledge of an entire unit, formative assessments are daily measurements of a student’s development.

This form of assessment allows instructors to better serve their students by tracking their progress and determining tomorrow’s lesson based on what was absorbed and what needs more reinforcement from today’s lesson.
