Sewer back ups and issues with inflow and infiltration in the City of Washington were discussed at length at the city council’s meeting last night. Councilman Bob Shellmyer stated that multiple homes in Ward 3 had issues concerning sewage backing up in basements with fecal matter present. Dr. David Nacos, who lives on 15th Avenue, reported to the council that in the last 13 months he has had issues with sewage backing up following large rainfalls, which has cost approximately $20,000 in damages.
City Administrator Brent Hinson says that the best strategy is to address sewer separation issues the city is aware of and begin replacing sewer lining. He adds that it is a “many pronged” solution but that “there’s no immediate solutions or low-cost solutions.”
The council agreed, when reviewing the Capital Improvements Plan, to accelerate sewer separation and lining projects if possible.
