KCII SWAT Reports Twice Yesterday

A tree fell on a home on South 2nd Avenue in Washington last night during the storm.

The KCII Severe Weather Action Team went into action twice yesterday for severe thunderstorm warnings. The first warning issued at 8:15 called for a storm that could produce 60 mile per hour wind gusts and golf ball sized hail. The original stop time for that warning was 8:45; however that was delayed twice and ultimately was canceled at 9:35 p.m.

The second warning came shortly after; at approximately 9:45 p.m. a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Washington and Iowa counties and was expected to end at 10:30 p.m. That warning was also extended and was eventualy canceled at 11:15 p.m., also at that time a tornado watch for the area was lifted.

The storm reportedly produced pea-sized hail near Wellman and in other locations across the county. Heavy rain was reported and debris including trees and limbs had to be removed from roadways.

At approximately 11:15 p.m., Alliant Energy’s website reported 31,406 customers without power in their service area that includes Washington, Keokuk, Jefferson, Van Buren, Johnson, Wapello, Iowa and parts of Louisa, Henry, Linn and Muscatine counties.
