Tomorrow is Mother’s Day. The holiday was officially set by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson in 1914 as the second Sunday in May. According to National Geographic, it was observed as early as the 1850s in West Virginia with organizer Ann Reeves Jarvis, who worked to form clubs to improve sanitary conditions and trying to lower infant mortality by fighting disease, the groups also helped wounded soldiers of both sides during the Civil War. Jarvis and her groups also created Mother’s Friendship Day picnics in an effort to unite women in promoting peace.
