National Police Week is observed this week with National Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15th, as proclaimed by President John F. Kennedy in 1962. Special recognition for law enforcement officials who have lost their lives in the line of duty is paid this week.
In Washington, Marshal Aaron Baily and Sheriff William Fred Sweet lost their lives on June 25, 1930 while in the line of duty after trying to arrest a man for stealing a car. Also, FBI special agent Terry Anderson, originally from Washington, was killed in the line of duty in 1966 while he and other agents searched for a kidnapped victim, Peggy Ann Bradnick. Ultimately, the kidnapper was shot and killed and Bradnick was reunited with her family.
