Today is Police Memorial Day, a day set aside to remember those killed in the line of duty. The day recognized across the state honors law enforcement officials who have died while on duty as the result of a crime, an accident, or natural causes. In southeast Iowa, Marshall Douglas Paul Bell was shot and killed during a traffic stop outside of Keota in 1976. In April 2011, Keokuk County Sheriff’s Sergeant Eric Stein was shot and killed while attempting to question a subject at his rural home.
