The Washington Demon softball team showed that they haven’t missed a beat last night, beating Columbus Junction 11-1 in six innings.

The Demons went up to bat first, and like clock work got Maddie Bohr and Sammy Ellingson on base, which brought Stephanie Fishback to the plate. Fishback doubled and scored the two runners in the process. Fishback went 2-4 on the night, with a double and a couple of RBI’s and steals.

Columbus put up their only run in the bottom of the first, as Washington’s Ashley Rausch struggled a little with location, and some gap hits by Columbus put two on. The lead runner got caught in a pickle and tagged out, but a throwing error led to Coree Winters getting across the plate and making the score 2-1.

Washington never let go of the lead though, scoring two more in the second, scoreless in the third and the fourth, and then scoring four in the fifth and three in the sixth. Newcomer to the varsity team Addie Shive stepped up and went 2-4 with a double and two RBI’s.

Demon head coach Angie Shrader said it was a good first game, and now that everyone is around they should be able to make it better.

“I thought we hit the ball well, we ran the bases extremely well, we were aggressive and we did make a few mistakes, and like I was telling the girl’s after the game this is literally the first time that all the girls have been on the same field at the same time,” Shrader said. “You know it is what it is with our schedule of our other sports and the first time that our kids are together in that lineup together was tonight, once we have a few more practices this week with the actual team together we can get a few of those things worked out.”

The Winning pitcher was Ashley Rausch, giving up the one earned run on three hits, two walks and five strikeouts. The losing pitcher was Wildcat Kelsey Pretz, who pitched out of a bases loaded situation in the third to keep the score 4-1. Pretz allowed 11 runs, nine of the earned, nine hits, five walks and three strikeouts.

Washington will play again on Friday against Highland, while Columbus will play game two of four this weekend tonight against Lone Tree.
