IMS Stays Hot; Batters Winfield-Mt. Union

Posted: Wednesday, June 26th, 2013 at 8:29 am

Early in the season the IMS baseball team had a hard time getting hits with runners in scoring position. In the last week regardless of the situation IMS has been pounding the ball and that continued in a 16-1 win Tuesday night over visiting Winfield-Mt. Union. It was actually the Wolves who got on the board first in the top of inning one when Lucas Rappenecker came in on a Matthew Neibuhr RBI single to make it 1-0. Following the game WMU Head Coach Kenton Klopfenstein talked about the importance of a good start for his team.

“Well we wanted to get on the board first and we were able to do that, but I wish that we could have got another one, or possibly two, we kind of let them off the hook on that one,” Klopfenstein said.

In the bottom half of the inning the IMS response was swift and powerful. IMS sent 11 total batters to the plate, the first eight reaching consecutively on hits, chasing Winfield-Mt. Union starter Travis Jones before he could record a single out. The top seven men in the IMS order would all score in the first inning. IMS erupted again in the third inning. After the first two men were retired by WMU reliever Thayne McElhinney a double and an error opened the flood gates for six more IMS runs putting the game out of reach at 13-1. The game would end with three more IMS runs in the fourth taking the score the 15 run rule level. After the game IMS Head Coach Danny Hershberger talked about his team’s performance at the plate.

“It was big for us to pick up where we left off, the guys came ready to play tonight we had a good mind set of coming in and wanting to play hard,” Hershberger said. “Cameron started off with a triple and that get everyone else going, and we kind of fed off each other there and just about everyone had a hit there in the first inning so it was good to see us start off like that.”

Every player in the IMS line up scored at least one run and had at least one hit. Cameron Gingerich, Reggie Hostedler, Dallas Nye and Tanner Leyden each drove in a pair. Leyden recorded the win for IMS going the full four innings allowing two hits, one run, walking three and striking out three more. IMS is now 8-12 overall 6-7 in conference. Winfield-Mt. Union falls to 4-11 overall and 4-10 in the SEISC.
