It was a tough night at the office for offense Saturday night in Wapello as Mid-Prairie defeated Central Lee 2-0 in the first round of class 2A district baseball. The Golden Hawks got on the board in the first inning when Nick Stimson reached on an error and Spencer Shalla drove him in with a two out RBI single. Staked to the early lead Mid-Prairie Senior Jonas Coblentz was fantastic on the mound, allowing just one hit through the first six innings and three total base runners during that time. Coblentz spoke after the game about his outing.

“I only threw two pitches, my fastball and my curveball, don’t have much of anything else,” Colbentz said. “My curveball, they were just way afraid of it and they swung no matter where it was, and it helped a lot.”

Mid-Prairie doubled their lead to 2-0 in the fourth with a lead off double by Shalla who was driven in on the next pitch when Jackson Yoder cracked an RBI single. Leading 2-0 going to the seventh things got interesting as Central Lee led off the inning with a single from Garrett Holtkamp. A strikeout and a fielder’s choice brought the winning run to the plate with two down. Following a two out walk, the bases were loaded and Coblentz responded by striking out designated hitter Clifford Munford to secure the win.

Coblentz tossed the complete game, three hit shut out while striking out 11. The win is his seventh in a row. After the game Head Coach Ryan Koller talked about his senior starter.

“He’s great at keeping guys off balance, and there are lot of guys on that team that he can just throw the ball by, they weren’t going to catch up to him,” Koller said. “I give a lot of credit to Jonas [Coblents] our pitcher, our senior leader who just did a great job.”

With the win Mid-Prairie is now 13-25 on the year and will next be in action Tuesday night in Wapello when they battle the top seed host school Indians who had a bye through the first round. The Golden Hawks and Indians will play at 7PM and you can hear all of the action with pregame starting at 6:30 on KCII.
