A two-vehicle accident in Henry County including a student driver sent one person to the hospital Sunday morning. According to the Iowa State Patrol, both cars were traveling northbound on Highway 218 at approximately 7:10 a.m. when the accident occurred.

Haley Ann Rodgers was operating one vehicle and was receiving drivers education instruction from 61-year-old Alexander Meltzer of New London when the vehicle ran out of gas. Meltzer’s vehicle began to slow down in the outside lane. The second vehicle, driven by 25-year-old Christina Hines of Columbus Junction moved to the inside lane and began passing the Meltzer vehicle. Meltzer then grabbed the steering wheel, taking control of the vehicle, and attempted to turn left into a gravel crossover causing the vehicle to sideswipe Hines’ car.

Hines was transported by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Iowa Courts Online lists an Alexander Meltzer of the same age has received two speeding tickets this year.
