The water in Wellman is safe to drink, according to City Administrator Nick Pacha and Kevin Baskins of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. A DNR advisory to the City of Wellman residents to drink bottled water has been lifted. They had been issued the advisory until repairs could be made on a broken line and water could be tested safely. Repairs are still under way and the city water source has been moved to other wells that do not have nitrite issues. According to Baskins, water sampling has confirmed water being drawn is safe.
The Department of Natural Resources had given a warning for the drinking water Thursday, when a pipe burst in the reverse osmosis system, which is used to reduce nitrite in the water supply.
