With a heat wave and no rain in the forecast, drought conditions in the state are expected to get worse. State Climatologist Harry Hillaker says the situation in southern Iowa is more severe than in northern Iowa. He explains if more rain isn’t received by the end of the month, records lows for precipitation could be broken in places like Iowa City, Keokuk, Burlington, and Washington.

According to Hillaker’s data, Washington has received only .15 inches of rain this month. The current record was set in 1901 at .24 inches.
