The Demon volleyball team starts off the season with a new coach and a clean slate.

Julianna Berg has taken over the program for Washington who went 13-16 last year.

Berg brings an extensive volleyball background that includes college volleyball at Missouri and some European professional volleyball.

Scheduled to come back this year on the team is Stephanie Fishback who was the leading killer with 198 on the year, but with the graduation of Beth Dillon and Sam Ellingson Washington will need to find another attacker with Anna Wheeler who was fourth on the team, or Lauren Swan who was fifth.

The Demons also need to replace setter Lauren Kimball who had 581 assists last year, but Junior Lauren Swan could step into that role, having some experience in that role last year.

Coach Berg says she is happy with her team this year, and thinks that they are transitioning well to her coaching style.

“Right now we are just mostly focusing on getting our fundamentals where they need to be, and every day I see something new from the girls that I like, and they are getting to know a new style of coaching and the girls are really responding well,” Berg said.

Washington starts things off with the Grinnell Invite on August 31, and will start their conference season on September 10 with they play their school rival Mt. Pleasant. The Demon play their first home game on September 12 when they host Fairfield.

On September 19 Washington will play Mid-Prairie for the county rivalry, and will host their own tournament on October 12. Regionals for Washington start on October 28.
