The Highland volleyball team brings back a veteran crew for the 2013 campaign.
The Huskies team is made up of almost all juniors and seniors from last years 16-16 season.
The team did lose their top attacker with Kelsey Doreo, but bring back their second best in Jordan Rath and her 92 kills last year and 56 aces. Kaitlin Hora will take over the sole responsibility as setter, as Taylor McDole graduates, and defensively Sam Dutton, Morgan Craig and Rath will make up for losing the 51 blocks of Doreo, but the Huskies will need to find a replacement for Kassie Vazquez and Paige Wieland who had the most digs last year.
Head coach Chris Rath said that the goal for this year is to start quicker than they did last year.
“I think our goal is definitively to get out team up to par faster, we are a little shorter on time this year, they moved our season to a week later, so our preseason is a little shorter, so mainly get them in shape, get them ready to go and compete faster with Mediapolis and Wapello and WMU and all of those team that come out of the blocks fast this year,” Rath said. “I think we would like to get a faster offense going this year and I think we have the ability to have a better and quicker defense also.”
Highland will start things off at the Keota tournament on August 26, and will start conference off with last years champion Mediapolis on September 5.
The conference tournament will be held on September 26 and 28, and Highland will play school rival Lone Tree on October 15.
