At last night’s Washington Community School Board meeting, Lincoln Elementary Principal Dave Hoffman gave a presentation about the school garden to the board. He shared vegetables with the board and described how the various grades incorporate the garden into curriculum.
The 3rd grade plants the seeds in the spring, the 4th grade weeds the garden until school lets out and 5th grade students will harvest the vegetables when the school year starts. During the summer, children involved with the YMCA helped take care of the garden.
The vegetables are incorporated in school lunches and compost practices were implemented. In addition, Hoffman explained that gardening helps increase students’ physical activity.
Corn, zuchinni, squash, pumpkins, tomatoes, carrots, broccoli and radishes can all be found at Lincoln Elementary’s garden.
