As harvest begins the Iowa Department of Transportation is reminding motorists to take precaution when sharing the road with farm vehicles. According to the DOT, there have been 79 crashes with farm equipment causing five deaths so far this year. Last year, there were 12 fatalities and 176 crashes; the most fatalities in a single year in the past 9 years. The DOT is reminding drivers to not text and drive, watch for slow-moving vehicles, provide additional space between vehicles and be patient. Also, the department advises farm vehicle operators to clearly use turn signal lights and pull over to allow traffic to pass when safe.
