This month is National Recovery Month and the Iowa Department of Public Health and local prevention and treatment organizations statewide are in observance. It is meant to recognize the benefits of substance abuse treatment, spread the message of recovery and to applaud the hard work of individuals and families in recovery. IDPH announced that on September 19th, Governor Branstad will sign a proclamation declaring September as National Recovery Month in Iowa.

According to IDPH, alcohol is the substance most abused by Iowans. According to a study of admissions to substance abuse treatment, 50 percent reported alcohol as their primary problem, marijuana was second at 26 percent, followed by methamphetamine at 17 percent.
